Start with the view from outside
A dining room can feel private in afternoon daylight and exposed during dinner. Before choosing a shade, turn on the lamps you normally use after dark. From a safe, permitted outdoor position, note the viewing angle into the room. A window beside a walkway deserves a different privacy plan from one facing an enclosed yard.
This is a room assessment, not a performance test of a product you have not bought. A small material sample can help you inspect the weave, but it cannot reproduce a full shade's perimeter, folds, or mounting gaps.
What is the difference between privacy and blackout lining?
A liner is a backing layer behind the woven shade. Privacy and blackout describe different priorities: limiting the view into a room and limiting light passing through the treatment. Do not use either label as proof of the other result. Check the exact lining material and the installed coverage, then choose around the room's evening routine.
- Daylight and visible weave come first: compare the unlined option, but do not assume it will provide evening privacy.
- The room is occupied after dark: investigate a privacy liner and ask what it conceals under interior lighting.

Ask how the liner and shade move
Do not assume a liner can be raised independently. Ask whether it is attached to the woven shade or operated separately for the exact product you are ordering. That distinction matters if you want exposed weave during the day but coverage during dinner.
Also check the liner color from both sides. A backing can change how light passes through the weave and what the treatment looks like from the street. If several front-facing windows will have different treatments, compare their outward appearance before ordering.
Check the edges, not just the center
Even a more opaque center does not address an uncovered side. Look at the window from an angle as well as straight on. Follow the Roman shade measuring guide for the selected mount. For an inside mount, enter the narrowest inside width exactly as measured; Fredesigner deducts 3/8 inch during production, so do not subtract it yourself.
An inside-mounted bamboo shade needs at least 2 inches of flat frame depth (2 1/2 inches if motorized), and that 3/8-inch deduction lets it move freely, which leaves narrow light lines at the sides. If those lines bother you more than a slightly tighter fit, add an order note asking for no width deduction. An outside mount that overlaps the frame covers those edges, which is why it is often the better choice when nighttime privacy matters most.
If curtains will provide the evening layer, make sure they are functional panels that can close across the opening, not decorative side panels. Leave room for both treatments to move without catching each other.
